, colorado. i'm jim lehrer of the "pbs news hour" i welcome you to the first of the presidential debates between president barack obama and former massachusetts governor mitt romney the republican nominee. this debate and the next three, two presidential, one vice presidential are sponsored by the commission on presidential debates. tonight's 90 minutes will be about domestic issues and will follow a format designed by the commission. there will be six roughly 15 minute segments, then open discussion for the remainder of each segment. thousands of people offered discussion suggestions. i made the final selections. for the record they were not submitted for approval to the commission or the candidates. the segments as i announced in advance will be three on the economy and one each on health care, the role of government and governing. with an emphasis throughout on differences, specifics and choices. both candidates will also have two minute closing statements. the audience here in the hall has promised to remain slinlt. no cheers, applause, boos, hisss among other noisy distracting thing

is still well above the national average. wolf. >> jim acosta joining us, thanks very much. let's dig deeper right now with our chief political analyst gloria borger. gloria, this unemployment number, the new number, how important is it to each of these two candidates? >> well, first of all it's got to be a real boost for president obama as jessica was talking about earlier. if not reality, then also a real psychological boost to get below that 8% figure. very important to them. because what it does, wolf, is it plays into the poll numbers that we've already been seeing, which is that people believe that things are getting better. the numbers are still not where the president wants them to be. but if it plays into a sense of optimism in this country, that's very good for the president. but overall you're going to hear the same refrain from both campaigns. the president's going to say that he's added more than 5 million jobs, and mitt romney's going to say there's still 23 million unemployed. >> you've spent a lot of time covering mitt romney. you did that excellent documentary all of

hours away. let's go straight to denver and to jim acosta. and, jim, does team romney, do they see the polls we ran through, is this a sign the race is tightening, is the wind in romney's sails, is it there going into tonight? >> they do, actually. i just got off the phone with a couple of romney campaign sources, brooke. i can tell you that the romney campaign does see this race tightening right now and that their game plan for tonight, as it was laid out to me, is to make sure that trajectory as one romney campaign source put it continues. they want to see the race continue to tighten. it is interesting to give you a couple of nuggets i got off the phone call a few moments ago, they are not going to be looking for a knockout punch tonight. what they're hoping to do for the american people is show a contrast, a clear contrast as they call it between the president's handling of the economy and what mitt romney would do were he elected president to fix the economy. so that is basically the game plan from the romney campaign, do no harm and live to fight another day. >> it is interes

was very aggressive at the debate which was quite different than it was when she ran against jim talen. she had a confidence and was much more ladylike in 2006. but in the debate on friday she came on swinging and i think that's because she feels threatened." republicans are trying to ignore akin's latest sexist comment. an rnc spokesperson said "i think it's best if the nrsc weighs in on these questions because we're so focused on the presidential." the nrcc spokesperson said, "decline to comment." it gets worse. according to "the los angeles times" akin told supporters, "the first two minutes, wow, it's like somebody let a wildcat out of the cage. she was just furious and attacking in every different direction which was a little bit of a surprise to us." you know, it's par for the course, from the candidate who said this -- >> it seems to me, first of all, from what i understand from doctors, that's really rare. if it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. >> of course, akin tried to apologize and now that republicans are struggling to regain t

worry. >> senator jim webb, former navy secretary, a vietnam war veteran, spoke with president obama today in virginia beach. and he went right at mr. romney on foreign policy and the wars. and he is -- he's right there when he says that we don't know what mr. romney would do if he became president. mr. romney has said recently and vaguely that he supports what president obama is doing in afghanistan in terms of there being a timeline for leaving but he has also said he was against a timeline for leaving in the past. so really who knows? he's not even trying. the closest we've gotten to any competing cogent republican position on the war is probably what we got from senator john mccain at the republican convention when he said that the afghanistan war just shouldn't end. he also thinks that the iraq war shouldn't have ended. so i'm not sure that it's a politically viable position. even if it is an internally cogent one from the senator. for this year's nominee, it's apparently just not going to happen. not unless he starts it now. 40 days out, mitt romney did get as close as he gets
